Last season, students from Sprucecourt Junior Public School were invited to attend a workshop of Unapologetically Me – a brand new cabaret for kids aged 9-11. Created and performed by Sharron Matthews, an award-winning stage, film and television performer, this interactive show combines contemporary pop, rock and punk songs with Sharron’s true stories of growing up, facing fears and learning self-acceptance.

After the workshop,  Sharron listened to the students’ feedback and made a few adjustments to her cabaret, which will now be presented in the YPT Studio from Oct. 2-21.

“Entering into a workshop situation is daunting in the most ideal of situations…BUT kids are so honest. The first workshop was very difficult…I was trying to figure out what story to tell, how to tell it and what the target age group was. I knew within the first few minutes of the first workshop two years ago that I had to go back to the drawing board…BUT I went back to the drawing board armed with all the information I gathered during that first workshop and came back with a project that was stronger, more focused and better suited to the audience. The next two workshops were so informative and joyous! The kids were fantastic and receptive…and helpful. What a gift to have them to work with! ” – Sharron Matthews

Our former Interim Artistic Associate, Education, Lois Adamson, was able to conduct an impromptu interview with two students about their thoughts on the play and what they took away from it. Both YPT and Sharron loved hearing what they had to say – see below.
